These prayer cards are common practice at Shinto shrines and temples all over Japan. Visitors purchase a prayer card, write a prayer on it, then hang it among all the others so that their prayers will be heard by the spirits. Most of the prayers that I saw were wishes for peace, love, and friendship.

Something about being a part of a collective whole is what really touched me about these prayer cards, that not one of them has any more importance than another.
